Growing up, children are taught street smarts. They should look both ways before they cross the street and they need to wear their seatbelts. These days, however, street smarts are no longer just for life offline. As the accessibility of the Internet has enabled the seamless sharing of status updates, pictures, and content, it’s impossible to guarantee that online information is 100% safe.
“When we look at the question of ‘Is my online information safe?’ the answer is [that] the risk associated with online information can be effectively managed,” said Steve Grobman, Chief Technology Officer of Intel/McAfee Technologies. “Having an awareness that things are not always exactly as they seem on the Internet is the key to becoming street smart online.”
Grobman relates online street smarts to driving a car. Just as a driver wears his seatbelt and follows the rules of the road, an online user needs to take the proper precautions when navigating the Internet.
“You need the right technology to help you detect threats, but as the operator of that environment, you still need to be vigilant,” said Grobman. “You still need to drive that technology in a safe manner, exactly the way that you would in driving an automobile safely.”
In the following video, Grobman identifies how to become savvier with online security so users can take full advantage of the Internet’s value while managing their risk.
